About A Webmaster - What You Need To Know

But My Blog’s Different

January 28, 2009

Even if you think that yours is tightly focused and you’ve stuck to your niche, it might not be as focused when Google has a look at it. A significant number of the links within canned blog software like Wordpress are going to be date links. So unless you’ve decided to build your own content management system, you’re going to have this problem. The problem is that the link text isn’t going to be topic oriented, but rather be the date for that particular post. If you’ve read through this website at all then you’re likely aware that the link text in your internal links contributes to Google’s opinion of what your site is about. So even with ideal content, the traditional blog format just isn’t a great match with Adsense.

Now I know what you’re thinking. You see big blogs with Adsense all of the time. How can it work for them? Well the truth is that it generally doesn’t. If you have a look at John Chow’s 11 month income graphs, you’ll see that as his traffic and revenue increased, Adsense didn’t really pick up much. Eventually, it reached a point where he eventually dropped it altogether. His other revenue streams perform much better. Any bigger blogs that retain Adsense as an advertiser generally do it because it’s very hassle-free and with enough volume, it can pay out decent amounts.
