About A Webmaster - What You Need To Know

Bandwidth And Disk Space

March 23, 2007

First we'll begin with the basics. Once common denominator amongst web hosts is that they all provide different packages based on things like disk space and bandwidth. This is where most webmasters start to have questions.

How much disk space you will need and how much bandwidth you will consume are entirely dependent on the makeup of your website and the tendencies of your visitors. But you can give yourself some estimates to work from.

Determining the amount of disk space you're going to require should be a fairly straightforward. Get a rough approximation of how many pages you're expecting to have on your website within the next six months or so. Multiply that number by your average webpage size. The same formula applies if you're going to have large images or media files on your website. After you come up with that number, you're likely to still be well under the limit of most hosting packages. If you're not, be sure to build in some headroom when you make your choice. You don't want to find yourself right at the limit because it will place an obstacle to growth directly in your path at an early stage in the game.
