How To Become A Webmaster – First Steps
April 8, 2009
Some years ago I wrote an article on the education paths that a person could follow on their way to becoming a webmaster
. Some people will completely bypass the education step and just dive in. There’s nothing wrong with that approach and even those who pursue education in the field will eventually have to take a big step, moving from school to the web as a workplace.
If I had my time back, I would have approached things a little differently. The first step to take is to sign up for a hosting package. Don’t over-think this at the start. You can always change your host later on if you’re not happy. Do a bit of research on some basics of web hosting
, do a little survey to see what the lay of the land is and then commit to spending $10-$20 a month to get started.
Now start a blog. Just do it. Don’t over-think it. If you’re not sure how to start a blog, Wordpress
is one of the more popular blogging packages that you’ll be able to install in your webspace. Ultimately, the best way to learn is by doing. A blog will expose you to many elements of the web game.
